2021 Rugby Season

11 Nov 2020 by Owen Jenkins

Flinders Rugby Players and Families,

We wanted to update everyone who couldn’t make this year’s AGM so that you can know what is happening with your club and also to offer some insight into exciting plans for next season.

To summarise this season, despite some disruptions we completed 12 rounds (14 initially planned pre-COVID) of rugby from ages U6 through to U12, with our mighty U12s winning their third place final 52-0 vs Maroochydore.

We want to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing committee for all the hard work they have put in at Flinders Rugby Club and also the generous sponsors this season for their support: Sarah Tipper, Peter Jorgensen, Scherone Arndell, Rebecca Simpson, Dirk Long, Michael Kane, Guy Hills; Mosaic Property Group, Evans and Long, Currey and Jorgensen Dentistry, Cutting Edge Cabinets, Pacific Land Rover, Coastal Patios and The Wharf Mooloolaba.

We could not have functioned as a Rugby Club and given the kids such valuable experiences without the time and help of these good people and others that are continuing their efforts, or without the generosity of these great businesses. Thank you once again from the whole of Flinders Rugby Club.

Let me offer a glimpse into the prospects and plans for the 2021 season. Our new committee is enthusiastically working to make Flinders Rugby Club the envy of local sports clubs. We are passionate about working on building further our club culture and team spirit across all ages. Conversations have already taken place with the school to look at ways to further integrate our efforts and bring valuable interaction between our older and younger players and coaches.

We intend to invest in our coaches to deliver an ever increasing quality of guidance for our children, and also in training clinics that the kids will both enjoy and learn from. Regular skills clinics will be arranged to focus on specific areas within the great game of Rugby. We plan to host the first full day Rugby Tournament on the sunshine coast for many years. Restrictions allowing, we would love to offer the opportunity for our teams to travel away next season to play clubs outside the Sunshine Coast or for fun training camps. Beyond into 2022 we would love to take teams overseas. Look out also for Wednesday night School Rugby events. We’d love to help provide an enjoyable family atmosphere where the kids can proudly support their teams, have fun and grab a quality feed for all.

Keep an eye out for new season promotion events, recent new Wallaby and former Flinders Rugby Club Player (U7 – U12) Tate McDermott is excited to come down to Flinders to meet the players and help with our recruitment. We plan to make registrations for 2021 the easiest ever and our new website (live by next week) and digital presence will help with that. Players will be provided with their full kit as part of their registration, without the need to run around gathering additional items of clothing. We will be offering the greatest value and quality on the Sunshine Coast and our kids are going to really look the part. Supporters will not be forgotten with new supporter gear in the pipeline as well. We intend to attract new players and field teams in every age group U6 – U13 or higher if possible, whilst giving all loyal players quality game time and experiences.

For all of this to be realised and for a high level of coaching and training to be available to our children we are once again looking for sponsors to come on board and help the club and for our children to receive the best quality training and equipment possible.

A letter will be following this outlining the sponsorship packages and for those of you that are available to support us in a financial capacity, it would be greatly appreciated and lovingly received. There may be those of you that are unable to help out financially but may have a specific skill that could be used to help our kids on the playing field and in life, or you may be able to help out at home games on the BBQ or as field marshals. We will gladly support any parents with training to become coaches or coaching assistants, no matter what your sporting background is.

There is no shortage of areas where we need support and assistance, and as they say many hands make light work. So please make yourself known, become a true supporter of the Flinders Rugby Club – someone who is actively interested in and wishes success for our teams.

Also remember, every person involved in the club is a volunteer – someone who is giving up their own time and energy for the good of all our children. There are no paid positions nor are there handouts of any description, there is just good intentions, patience and hard work.

On behalf of our club committee, thanks for taking the time to read this – let’s all work together to make 2021 a year to remember for our children and for Flinders Rugby Club. Please feel free to contact me should you have any queries or feedback to offer.

Cheers,
Go Flinders!
